biography:

Born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1955

Formal Education:

• History of Art & Linguistics at The University of Zurich
• Apprenticeship in antique carpentry and cabinetmaking
• Apprenticeship in restoration, specializing in the restoration of antique furniture, painting and ceramics.
• Studied painting at Freie Akademie Rotterdam, Holland.
• Education in Baubiologie (the use of environmently safe building materials).

Reto Messmer has been working as a muralist and decorative painter continuously since 1985 in Switzerland and several other European countries. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1995 and has worked throughout the states for private as well as commercial clients including restaurants, museums and shops.

 

statement: "My range of work includes everything from small or large murals in fresco or secco technique, every kind of paint technique or faux finish to the design and creation of whole interiors and the transformation of rooms and space. Whenever possible I manufacture my own paint from raw materials according to traditional recipes and my own experience--partly for health reasons but also for aesthetic reasons. Certain paint effects cannot be achieved with modern commercial paints."
